“Mental health problems don’t define who you are. They are something you experience. You walk in the rain and you feel the rain, but, importantly, you are not the rain.”
— Matt Haig
My philosophy surrounding mental health counseling is that each person is uniquely created to function in their environment according to their strengths. Sometimes, those strengths become compromised and overwhelmed by our circumstances creating the need for a pause to reset mentally and emotionally. I recognize everyone has their own personal journey and come physically, mentally and emotionally from different places. I welcome the opportunity to help you navigate these places. I believe in client directed therapy where we work on what you need. I practice primarily from a cognitive behavioral approach; however, I am aware of the individuality of each client and will tailor the sessions to what is best for the client. Research into mental illness is ongoing and as such I am committed to continually learning new research-based interventions to best match the needs of you, the client.
Currently, I am a graduate student at Liberty University pursuing a master’s in clinical mental health counseling. I have completed all the coursework and am now working through my internship. Before pursuing this degree, I graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Business Administration. I have over 35 years of work experience in professional settings as well as being the owner/manager of my own businesses. I believe this experience as well as other life experiences position me to help others who are navigating life and finding balance within their life.
I am preparing the take the National Certification Exam (NCE) to become certified as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) with the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). After graduation, I will apply to the Mississippi State Board of Examiners for a provisional license to practice mental health counseling in the State of Mississippi. Upon completion of the requirements for the provisional license, I will apply for full licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
While at DFCPTC, I will be receiving supervision from Sarah O’Neal, LPC on a weekly basis.
I am looking forward to meeting you and walking with you on your journey. It is a privilege and responsibility I do not take lightly. So, let’s get going and make a new start together.
